A Relaxed, Receptive State of Mind

Consumers are harder to reach than ever. Their days are packed, their attention fragmented, and moments for genuine engagement are increasingly rare.

Yet, rideshare creates a different kind of environment — one where it’s possible to make a meaningful connection.

Anticipation begins before pickup, and during the trip, riders are no longer only focused on where they were or fully absorbed in where they’re going. During this in-between moment, attention is high, distractions are low, and discovery feels natural.

For brands, this creates a valuable opportunity to deliver messages that feel timely and relevant. As new Lyft Ads survey data shows¹, the rideshare experience provides a distinct advantage that few other platforms can replicate.

Engagement Starts Before the Ride Begins

What riders told us

Riders are engaged for an extended period of time

Rider attention begins building well before the car arrives. The opportunity to connect starts the moment someone opens the Lyft app, continues throughout the ride journey — which lasts 24 minutes on average² — and after the ride.

How brands can show up

  • Own the Lyft map with branded icons that showcase your logo or custom imagery or use a Map Splash to build branded visibility before the ride begins. This is especially effective for product launches, seasonal campaigns, and entertainment tie-ins where Map Ads on Lyft drive a +12.6ppt lift in Lyft Ad Awareness, +8.0ppt lift in Brand Favorability, and +9.8ppt lift in Purchase Intent*
  • Use Vertical Video to deliver short-form storytelling — from trailers and teasers to new product introductions — before the ride and during the trip.
  • Extend your reach beyond the ride through Audience Extension across CTV, online video, and display, turning  into a broader cross-channel campaign.

Receptivity Shifts Based on the Nature of the Trip

What riders told us

A rider’s mindset can shift from trip to trip

Time pressure, energy level, distance to destination, and social context can influence receptivity, with riders especially open to messaging while taking longer rides or when heading to social events.

How brands can show up

  • Align creative and messaging with Rider Destination and emotional state so tone and timing feel natural. Sponsored Rides can enhance relevance by pairing contextual brand messaging with a destination-based offer that delivers value to the rider.
  • Capitalize on Lyft’s first‑party audience segments to reach riders whose trip patterns, destinations, or purchase behavior align with your campaign goals.
  • Prioritize moments with strong receptivity, such as weekend rides and trips that likely have longer travel time, such as travel to an airport.

Riders Welcome Freebies and Value-Driven Offers

What riders told us

Value-driven offers transform an ad to an appreciated benefit

A benefit powered by a brand transforms an ordinary ad placement into a value add for the rider. This is one of the most powerful shifts available to rideshare advertisers.

How brands can show up

  • Lead with value that makes the ride feel more affordable and enjoyable. With 83% of riders interested in having a brand discount their ride, Sponsored Rides give advertisers a way to show up as a useful benefit, not just a message. This value-led approach also maps to brand impact: Lyft campaigns drove a +9.7ppt lift in Lyft Ad Awareness and a +7.7ppt lift in Brand Favorability*
  • Connect incentives to where riders are heading through Sponsored Rides. This is especially effective for retail, QSR, and entertainment-related campaigns.
  • Create a seamless experience by integrating your brand into the ride experience, rather than treating it as a separate promotion. For instance, you can drive immediate action with “Tap to Redeem” In-App Ride Credits that a rider can instantly add to their account and redeem during a current ride.

Transit Time Inspires Planning and Discovery

What riders told us

The ride creates space for curiosity

Riders are in a decision-making mode: forward-looking and open to discovery. Many riders are thinking ahead — about where to eat, what to do, and what to explore when they arrive.

How brands can show up

  • Use Vertical Video to deliver a quick, high-attention message while riders are in a curious, planning-oriented mindset.
  • Inspire the rider’s next move with carousel creative that highlights multiple products, offers, destinations, or experiences.

Live Events are Big Spending Moments

What riders told us

The ride to a concert, festival, or game feels different from an everyday trip

Riders are excited and planning to spend money on worthwhile purchases. This is a rare combination. In addition, they often expect brands to be part of the event experience, such as through partnerships, promotions, or recommendations that make the night better.

How brands can show up

  • Combine in-app media with visibility near the venue. For example, Branded Wraps on the outside of rideshare vehicles in the area* can generate buzz.
  • Use Sponsored Map Vehicles to turn the map into a branded event canvas while riders are actively checking their trip.
  • Where available, use Lyft Ads Rider Graph to uncover deeper insights into live event audiences, including their interests, behaviors, and real-world intent signals — helping brands reach consumers with greater precision.

Travel Fosters a Discovery Mindset

What riders told us

Travel fosters openness and curiosity

Visitors are actively looking for places to go, things to do, and experiences that help them feel connected to the area they’re in. Routine disappears, curiosity takes over, and recommendations feel less like advertising and more like helpful local guidance.

How brands can show up

  • Help travelers discover local highlights by providing relevant recommendations for restaurants, nightlife, and cultural experiences.
  • Surface timely offers and local promotions that feel useful in the moment through Sponsored Rides placements.

What This Means for Marketers

  1. Transit time creates a uniquely valuable window for brands to influence real-world decisions while consumers are actively planning their next move.
  2. Receptivity is driven by context — including destination, emotional state, ride purpose, time of day, and social setting — making ride signals more valuable than static audience targeting alone.
  3. The strongest opportunities for engagement happen before riders mentally transition toward an arrival-focused mindset, making pre-pickup through the middle of the ride a valuable window for brands.
  4. Consumers prefer ads that provide an extra value, such as ride discounts, perks, destination-based rewards, or sponsored offers.
  5. Rides to live events offer brands the powerful combination of high emotional energy, elevated spending intent, and openness to brand engagement.
  6. When riders are visiting new areas or navigating unfamiliar places, they are especially open to discovery, welcoming suggestions and tips.

Methodology: Data Scope and Quality Controls

This analysis is based on 401 survey respondents from an April 2026 rideshare rider survey. To ensure data quality, we cleaned the data to remove outliers for a robust analysis.

This methodology ensures that every recommendation in this guide is backed by survey-based evidence, not industry assumptions or borrowed best practices from other platforms. In addition, every recommendation was validated by a team of experts from sales, UI/UX, design and creative teams at Lyft.
